We have posted many articles on this blog showing that current scientific research has clearly and unequivocally debunked the theory that global warming is primarily caused by human use of fossil fuels. There have been multiple studies and peer reviewed papers showing that humans do not cause global warming. A scientific theory falls when even one premise upon which it is based is proven wrong.
So why do so many politicians including the three Presidential candidates still push this theory? Because global warming has turned into a political movement.
It is a vote getter.
We have seen this transformation of a debunked scientific theory turn into a political movement before. The prime example is the DDT scare in the 1960s.
Dichlorodiphenyl-trichloroethane [DDT] was first introduced for commercial use in the United States in 1947. It was the most effective of all of the synthetic insecticides, and the least costly to produce. There is no evidence of any fatal poisoning, or other adverse reaction, in humans from DDT in spite of widespread and intimate application. In fact all recorded attempts at suicide where DDT was used failed. Workers at the Montrose Chemical Company absorbed 400 times as much DDT as the average American, but not a single case of cancer was reported.
Then a nationwide hysteria followed the publication of Rachel Carson's book, Silent Spring in 1962, in which she labeled DDT a dangerous chemical that might be causing cancer in humans. Experience and scientific studies have proven her wrong. Carson, who was a vegetarian, blamed DDT for her own breast cancer. She was wrong again. Carson resorted to the distortion of facts in her book in a campaign to condemn DDT.
DDT was banned in the United States and soon after globally by the UN. The ban on DDT directly caused an increase in mosquito born malaria particularly in Africa. Over a period of decades tens of millions of innocent men, women and especially children died of malaria. All because of a baseless and unscientific political movement on the part of environmentalists and their supporters in Congress and the UN.
Fast forward to today. We have now scientifically debunked the theory that global warming is primarily and unequivocally caused by human use of fossil fuels.
We now know the following facts:
· Ice core data shows that there have been repeated heating and cooling events on the earth long before human activity was significant. Global warming is a naturally occurring event. Attempting to interfere in this process may have unpredictable consequences.
· The Earth cooled between 1940 and 1975 while fossil fuel consumption rose dramatically. The Earth should have warmed if CO2 emissions from fossil fuel consumption is a cause of global warming. The theory does not fit the data.
· Ignoring data that does not fit a theory is poor science. Only one inconsistent piece of data is necessary to negate a theory.
So why do environmentalists, politicians and some companies still cling to a debunked scientific theory?
Global warming has transformed into a political movement.
It is political because environmentalists and their liberal friends can use it to attack oil and coal companies. They can use it to attack current forms of fossil fuel energy production and push renewable energy sources. They can use it to punish industrialized nations. They can use it to attack any company or industry that makes a profit from the exploration for, mining or drilling of and sale of fossil fuels.
They can with impunity attack cheap and reliable energy, the foundation of capitalism.
So what has been the political results of the global warming hoax. We now have mandated carbon emission caps. The movement toward cap-and-trade policies. Mandates to use alternative fuels, especially corn based ethanol. The use of more and more agricultural land to produce biofuels. Mandates to expand the less efficient and more costly use of wind and solar power. Mandates on increasing fleet mileage standards. Higher emission standards for automobiles and fossil fuel plants. The movement to single out oil companies and tax their profits. A refusal by environmentalists to explore, drill or mine for more fossil fuels.
What is the impact of these and other policies? Energy is dramatically more expensive. Fuel, electricity and home heating oil prices are higher. All products and services that require transportation to market are higher. Food costs are higher.
High food prices have sparked a great deal of unrest over the past few weeks. Indeed, the skyrocketing cost of food staples like grain has caused protests involving thousands of people in places such as South Africa, Egypt and Pakistan. These protests turned deadly in Haiti and even led to the ouster of Prime Minister Jacques-Edouard Alexis.
We are now seeing a repeat on a global scale of what happened with DDT in the 1960s. Global warming has been debunked as a scientific theory but the political movement continues unabated.
This is deja vu all over again. When will we wake up and learn from the past. How many people will need to die needlessly before we say enough to the environmentalists and their liberal friends?
What do you think?
UPDATE: Here is Glenn Beck's April 8, 2008 piece on global warming. It shows how the BBC caves after a global warming activist complains about a story that the globe is cooling. The BBC reporter at the end changes the story to fit the world view of the activist. As Glenn Beck points out this is McCarthyism.
